Department History

The Center Police Department traces its roots back to the early days of Shelby County, established in 1837 during the Republic of Texas. Prior to the formation of a formal police department, law enforcement services in Center were provided by city marshals and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.

On April 22, 1913, the department was officially organized, marking the transition to a structured municipal police agency. Early staffing was limited, but the department expanded alongside the growth of the City of Center. Since its establishment, the city has officially had eight Chiefs of Police, whose leadership has played a critical role in shaping the department’s professionalism and service standards.

A significant modernization effort in the 1950s brought the department in line with evolving state law enforcement standards and established the operational foundation still in place today.

Today, the Center Police Department is committed to delivering professional law enforcement services, enhancing public safety, and building strong partnerships within the community. Through integrity, accountability, and community-oriented policing, the department continues its mission of protecting and serving the citizens of Center, Texas.
